PRODUCE

Kalona Organics’ produce comes fresh from
a community of Amish and Mennonite family farms. For generations
our farms have used sustainable, organic farming techniques. Our produce
reaps the benefits of their traditions and their spiritual appreciation
of the natural environment.
In the middle of the 20th century, agriculture and food systems took a dramatic
change. Maximizing farm productivity became the focus when new plant technologies,
more chemical use and mechanization came to fruition. This new modernization
allowed larger farms to move forward with the new approach to agriculture, while
family farms began to dissolve. Amish and Mennonite farms, on the other
hand, went on with their tradition of farming their small plots of land for their
families and small communities.
By continuing to farm in their traditional manner, our Amish and Mennonite farms protected their land from the unforeseen costs of modern farming such as erosion, topsoil depletion, and groundwater contamination. The quality of Kalona Organics produce is unmatched because it is grown in soil that is wonderfully rich and bountiful due to the respectful treatment of the land that is inherent to our farmers’ traditions.
